Heavily armed Pakistani intruders shot and killed five Indian Army soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch sector on Monday night, in an assault that threatened to derail the peace dialogue between the two countries.

The news triggered an uproar in Parliament amid allegations that the attackers included members of Pakistani army, a charge that was denied by Islamabad.

Defence minister AK Antony told Parliament that the attack was carried out by “terrorists along with persons dressed in Pakistan army uniform.”

He said India would take all necessary steps to uphold the sanctity of the Line of Control (LoC) and was capable of protecting its border.

The government summoned Pakistani deputy high commissioner Mansoor Ahmed Khan and lodged a strong protest against the killings. Read more…

A junior commissioned officer and four jawans of the 21 Bihar Unit were killed and one critically injured in the attack.

A senior army official in Jammu and Kashmir, who didn’t want to be named,  said “the ambush was carried out by approximately 20 heavily armed terrorists along with soldiers of Pak Army.”

The attackers belonged to the border action team of the Pakistan army and Lashkar-e-Taiba, Hizbul Mujahideen and Jaish-e-Mohammad, he said.  The claim could not be independently verified.

Pakistan’s foreign office spokesman Aizaz Chaudhary denied the attack by the Pakistan army. Read more…

Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi termed it a “dastardly ambush” while Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah said the killings won’t “help efforts to  normalise or even improve relations” with Islamabad. Read more…

These incidents don’t help efforts to normalise or even improve relations with Pak & call in to question the Pak Govt’s recent overtures.
